New: Submit Your Questions

One of the things I love to do on phpBB Weekly is answer questions from listeners about phpBB. Unfortunately, up until now, I could only take questions from listeners who were called in or in the chatroom during the weekly recording.

No longer! If you aren’t able to join in while the show is being recorded for whatever reason, but you still want to send in a question about phpBB (general or specific), the Submit Your Questions form on this website is now live and ready.

When I receive e-mails through this form, each week I will try to answer a few of them on the show. Note, however, that the rules for sending in your questions online are stricter than the rules for asking a question live on the air, mostly because when you’re called in, I can talk with you back and forth. Here, I’m just reading a question, and then giving an answer on the air.

Please also note that this form is not for one-on-one support. I will not respond by e-mail to any submitted questions; you will only receive a reply if I let you know that your question was read on-air. If you want help right away, there are places to get it. ;)

I look forward to reading some great e-mails! And as always, remember to join in on the show every Saturday at noon EDT! :)

Download MP3 Episode (12.4 MB)

Episode Duration: 30:51
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples)

April Fools Day brings the announcement that Bertie has conquered Olympus on Mars! A very cute photo, in Douglas’ opinion. The prosilver theme has been uploaded to CVS, and Douglas highlights the major changes between the to-be-released prosilver and the phpBB.com prosilver. However, along with the prosilver theme comes a new backend theme to the admin panel which is kind of dark, with a lot of grey, and Douglas doesn’t really like it.

Because of prosilver, a number of users are asking for a beta6 release. Douglas reviews their arguments, and the possible pros and cons of releasing beta6 or going straight to an RC-1 release.

Last Wednesday, April 4th was the 5th anniversary of the release of phpBB 2.0.0!

The MOD of the Week is the Simple Subforums MOD by pentapenguin, which is a very simple way for adding subforums to phpBB2 assuming you don’t have to go more than one level down (which most boards shouldn’t have a problem with).

The Style of the Week is the Macinscott 2 theme by Scott Stubblefield (view demo), a really nice theme that does a great job of emulating Mac OS X. A must-have for Mac forums!

Finally, Douglas introduces and covers all the features of the new phpBB Weekly website.

Correction: During the episode I indicated that there was some limited use of AJAX in the ACP. While the ACP does make use of some Javascript, it is not AJAX. AJAX is a much more complex technology which is not utilized in phpBB3. (It is undecided whether AJAX will be used in future versions of phpBB.) Thanks to lachlan for pointing this out!

New phpBB Weekly Website!

Hello, and welcome to the new phpBB Weekly website! This website is going to be a great place to find out all about phpBB Weekly, learning about future episodes of phpBB Weekly, and also being able to listen to past episodes. In addition, the new blog will allow me to easily post updates for changes to show times or cancellations (when I have to), and I’ll also be posting responses/summaries to breaking phpBB news throughout the week on the blog.

Oh, and did you know you can now comment on episodes? Want to answer some questions that I can’t or make corrections to things I say? Anyone can now make a comment! (Note that your first comment will need to be approved by me as an anti-spam measure.) Please, do not ask for support in the comments section. There will soon be a place on the site where you can e-mail questions to talk about on the air. If you have a support question which you need solved right away, go to the phpBB.com forums. That’s what they’re there for. ;)

Enjoy the new website, and thanks for continuing to listen to and participate in the podcast!
