On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples), David Lewis (Highway of Life), and Eric Faerber (wGEric)

Eric Faerber returns for his second appearance on phpBB Weekly, and one which probably is a bit more informative than his first appearance was (and the blame for that can go directly to Douglas). It’s also the day after Douglas’ birthday, and so we do a short celebration for him as well. We also do our best to run the show while phpBB.com is down for “unexpected maintenance”, and we also launch a new feature on this episode: the phpBB Weekly Trivia Question. :)

During the interview with Eric, David mentions a few more new Support Team members, and mentions that Acyd Burn has confirmed that there will be an RC-6 release coming. We also take a look at the new hooks system that was recently added into CVS and will be coming out with phpBB3 RC-6 and ask what it means for MODs, and Douglas reiterates his wish for a WordPressish plugin system for the MODding of the future. We also talk about other new things for MODs in phpBB3, and then ask Eric some user-submitted questions about the MOD Team. Eric also reveals a couple of details of the upcoming EasyMOD for phpBB3 (Codename: Blinky).

Since phpBB.com was down, we had to take our MOD and Style of the Week off of Star Trek Guide, which is probably the best alternative. Anyway, the MOD of the Week is PM Alert Layer for phpBB3 by angelside, and the Style of the Week is Aqua Glass for phpBB3 by Trent.

Incidentally, if you would like to send your birthday wishes to Douglas, the Star Trek Guide folks have already setup a topic for that.

Upcoming Guests for phpBB Weekly

We’re hearing from our listeners that you guys love it when we bring on guests to the show. And, now that David is on the teams, we’re hearing from all these team members that want to be guests on the show. Well, we’re probably not going to be going all out to bring guests on every week, but we’re probably going to start having more of them, and our next two episodes are going to be some exciting ones. I mentioned these briefly at the end of phpBB Weekly #031, but wanted to reiterate them here.

On phpBB Weekly #032, this Saturday, September 29th, MOD Team leader Eric Faerber (wGEric) will be joining us again on phpBB Weekly. I had kind of a lame interview with him back on episode #004 (and it was completely my fault), so David will be doing most of the questioning on this show, but I’ll be there as well. We’ll be talking about some of the projects that the MOD Team is working on now in preparation for the upcoming release of phpBB3, what you need to know about MODding in phpBB3, and we’ll also be talking a bit about the new hooks and events functionality coming in the next phpBB3 release. And of course, Eric will be answering your questions and comments, so be sure to join us for the live episode!

Then, on phpBB Weekly #033, which will be on Saturday, October 6th, we will be inviting a small panel of other members of the Tech Podcasts Network (of which this show is a member, by the way) to join us to talk about their experiences with building a true community around a bulletin-board/forum website, along with tips and answering questions. (Note that this is still subject to change as I’m still trying to arrange a panel, or at the very least, a guest!) Join us to get some expert tips on how you can attract members to your forum and build a community.

We have these shows and some other exciting shows planned, and we hope to have you join us for our upcoming episodes of phpBB Weekly!

Episode Duration: 1:01:20
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples) and David Lewis (Highway of Life)

Douglas returns from picking up around the Bay Area, and after telling an interesting and disappointing story from his excursion (which has absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with phpBB3), he takes the reins and very thoroughly goes over the topic of banning. Covered on this show is why would you want to ban users? How do you ban users using phpBB? What are the differences in banning controls between phpBB2 and phpBB3? We also talk about how the phpBB3 warnings system can fit in here and discuss the importance of having set rules and guidelines on your forum, along with a cautionary warning about not getting carried away with banning users. (After all, you want to attract users to your forum, not send them away!) And then, Douglas selects two MODs of the Week which bring some of phpBB3′s enhanced banning functionality within the grasp of phpBB2 administrators. David also gives us the latest lowdown on recent changes to the phpBB teams, including a brand new Support Team leader, and then we announce some of the exciting episodes that will be coming up.

The two MODs of the Week this week are Ban Reasons and Temp Ban, both by eviL<3 for phpBB2. The Style of the Week is Thor by Wizardly for phpBB3.

phpBB Weekly #030

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download MP3 Episode (28.4 MB)

Episode Duration: 49:37
On This Episode: David Lewis (Highway of Life) and Francis Lewis (GroovePlugs/Handyman)

For the first time, Douglas steps off of the air on a phpBB Weekly episode and lets David take the helm. It’s probably risky, particularly after our excellent episode last week, but Coastal Cleanup Day in the San Francisco Bay Area and Douglas once again goes to do his part this year.

Meanwhile, David spends some time talking about how phpBB3 parses styles and how you can use certain styles only within specific forums in phpBB3. He then moves on to talk a bit about how you can integrate BBCode throughout your site and in your MODs, and then he talks a bit about how the module system works and whether or not a MOD should use it or not.

The next release (either RC-6 or final) of phpBB3 will include a new hooks functionality and a new DBAL tool, and what will this mean for MOD authors and how can they be implemented? This also means that MOD authors no longer have any excuse to not support all 8 DBMS types supported in phpBB3.

And for our weekly dose of MOD Team news, we talk a bit about MOD validation on phpBB.com and its importance, and we welcome Paul back on the MOD Team and also welcome Esmond Poynton (poyntesm) as the newest member of the MOD Team!

The MOD of the Week is ACP Add User MOD for phpBB3 by Highway of Life (that’s self-promotion for you!), and the Style of the Week is nDesign v2 for phpBB3 by Midnight Phoenix.

phpBB Weekly #029: Guest Yuriy Rusko (Marshalrusty)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download MP3 Episode (47.1 MB)

Episode Duration: 1:22:14
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples), David Lewis (Highway of Life), and Yuriy Rusko (Marshalrusty)

David did do one thing for this show when he joined the phpBB teams: he found a bunch of team members who were anxious to be guest hosts on phpBB Weekly. On this episode, we’re joined by guest host Yuriy Rusko, better known on phpBB.com as Marshalrusty, a member of the Support Team.

First off, David and Yuriy talk about the first episode of the new Official phpBB Podcast, which I guess is meant to differentiate it from this podcast. But then, they end up talking about the Official phpBB Podcast so much, including recapping a bit on their talk about the COPA and COPPA laws, that this show effectively is now the phpBB Podcast podcast. :P

However, we do have an interesting discussion with Yuriy about dealing with spam, (including CAPTCHAs and other anti-spam measures), security, and his experiences giving support for phpBB. David also takes a moment to recognize a few of the phpBB team members who have recently stepped down to return to their normal lives, and their many many contributions to the phpBB project.

The MOD of the Week is Font Type BBcode for phpBB2 by Templater, and the Style of the Week is BF Vista Style for phpBB3 by Frost.
If you want to recommend a MOD or Style for us to promote, bookmark it on del.icio.us with the tag “phpbbwmod” or “phpbbwstyle”, and we might feature it on a future episode.
