On This Episode: David Lewis (Highway of Life) and Francis Lewis (Handyman)

At long last, phpBB Weekly #035 (originally aired on October 20th, 2007) has been released. Douglas was away during this episode taking a test, and so David was joined by his brother and co-founder of Star Trek Guide, Francis Lewis, also known as Handyman.

David and Francis begin by looking at the latest changes to the phpBB3 CVS (which could either be Release Candidate 8 or 3.0 gold), welcome Dicky, the newest member of the Support Team, and take a look at some of the hottest questions coming from the phpBB Support forum. They then talk extensively about SEO in phpBB3.

The MOD of the Week is Global Announcements for phpBB3 by barrycarlyon, and the Style of the Week is Serenity for phpBB3 by CyberAlien.

Note About Audio Quality: David apparently had some difficulty getting the TalkShoe audio stream to produce good quality, which is why this episode doesn’t sound very good. To be honest, we’re not professional audio engineers, so we’re providing this episode “as is.” However, if any of you are professional audio engineers, contact us and we’ll let you have a crack at “fixing” phpBB Weekly #035, and give credit to whoever is successful. In the meantime, please forgive us for the quality of this episode.

phpBB Weekly Status Update

Okay, by now, I’m sure a number of you are wondering what’s going on with phpBB Weekly, and I’d like to take a moment to give a few explanations.

The live listeners will note that I have missed a couple of episodes in a row. I had anticipated missing phpBB Weekly #035 because I had to take the PSAT test that morning, however I did not anticipate missing phpBB Weekly #036 this morning, however after suffering a seven-hour delay on my return flight from LAX last night, I slept through much of the show. If you’d like to find out more about what I’ve gone through this week, check out my blog.

Because of my trip and school commitments, I did not get phpBB Weekly #035 released in a timely fashion this week. I therefore am promising that phpBB Weekly #035 will be released by the end of the day today, and I will be releasing phpBB Weekly #036 (what David recorded this morning) during the middle of the week this week. I really hope to make my triumphant return next Saturday, November 3rd.

A big thank you goes to all of our listeners for understanding and continuing to be fans of the show.

Late Release for #035

Hello everyone,

Due to a couple of circumstances phpBB Weekly #035 will be released a few days later than usual. We usually try to have episodes released the day after they’re recorded (on Sunday), but we’re going to have to beg for your indulgence and give us until tomorrow or Tuesday to release the show.

Thanks for your patience. According to what I’ve heard from David, it was a pretty good show.
–Douglas Bell

UPDATE 10/23: Well, it’s quite apparent that I didn’t make it for Tuesday. I would again like to apologize for this, but I’ve been rather overbooked this week between catching up in school and packing for a trip to Long Beach that I’ll be going on this week. However, I do intend to purchase internet access at my hotel, and will be editing phpBB Weekly #035 tomorrow while I’m waiting around at the airport, so I will definitely try to have phpBB Weekly #035 released tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday. I would again like to thank you for your patience. –Douglas Bell

phpBB Weekly Forum Now Open!

We’ve had a number of people e-mail us and tell us that, you know, if phpBB Weekly is all about forum software, shouldn’t you have a forum for phpBB Weekly? Well, it’s a great idea, but managing a forum is a lot of work (as we’ve mentioned on the show), and so far, we’ve pretty much been content with the comments system on the blog and the nice form where you can submit your questions.

Well, thanks to our good friends at Star Trek Guide, which, not coincidentally, is co-administrated by phpBB Weekly co-host David Lewis, they have now created a brand new forum just for phpBB Weekly, which we will be taking advantage of and hope that all of our wonderful listeners will take advantage of. Keep an eye out on there for topics where we’ll invite you to submit questions for when we bring guests on the show and ask for occasional feedback on the show. If there’s any comments from the forum that we find noteworthy, we may decide to mention your comments on the show. And, a much-requested, we have a special topic for help connecting to TalkShoe. :)

We’re really excited to be expanding phpBB Weekly in all of these ways. phpBB is about creating communities, and David and I are really excited to be able to find more and more ways to make phpBB Weekly a community-driven podcast. We may be the hosts, but you, the listeners, are the community members that make phpBB happen.

So run, don’t walk, over to the phpBB Weekly forum over at Star Trek Guide! :)

phpBB Weekly #034

Download MP3 Episode (49 MB)

Episode Duration: 1:25:40
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples) and David Lewis (Highway of Life)

This episode did not go according to plan. We had expected to have phpBB Developer DavidMJ on as a guest today, but unbeknownst to us at the time, he had a family emergency and was unable to make it, so we ended up coming together with a pretty good show while we stalled and took comments from our live listeners (six of whom were phpBB team members!). This episode was recorded right before the release of phpBB3 RC-6 and the ensuing chaos that has followed the release, which you can read a bit about in the previous post on this blog, and which will be discussed more thoroughly on next week’s episode. We do hope to try to bring DavidMJ on sometime in November, with more details coming soon.

In this episode we talk a bit about the phpBB Security Team and Incident Investigation Team and about what those teams do, and also briefly discuss some common security vulnerabilities common in PHP code that both the developers and MOD authors need to look out for. We do a little bit more coverage of the just-about-to-be-released RC-6, and wander off for a few minutes into a discussion of Mac security vs. Windows security. (It’s not as bad as you might think.) Then, Jeffro calls in and asks us to talk a bit more about just how private private messaging is, and we also talk about changes in phpBB3 styles vs. phpBB2 styles and possible enhancements to phpBB MODding in the long-term future.

The MOD of the Week is Notify Admin on Registration for phpBB3 by ameeck, and the Style of the Week is Playstation for phpBB3 by Scott Stubblefield.
