The older (pre-2007) CVS stats on Area51 didn’t start listing code in the repository until January 2003, which is why I had assumed 2003. Either way, it’s been about five years since development started, give or take a few months.

phpBB2.2 (phpBB3) started development soon after phpBB2 was released so 2002 IIRC.
