The phpBB Weekly Community “Help Us Design a New Theme and Album Artwork” Project

I don’t know if you’ve been by our phpBB Weekly forum recently, but a lot has been happening there recently. David and I have been discussing the idea of making phpBB Weekly’s branding a little more “Olympusy”–that is, more in tune with the phpBB3 artwork. While I have been and continue to remain to this day a big fan of the phpBB2 “hut” image that graced the phpBB.com website until March 2007, times have changed, people have upgraded, and the upcoming “end of life” of phpBB2 has shown us that it’s time that we start getting caught up.

David has designed a cool new album artwork proposal which we’re currently seeking feedback on and are considering adopting sometime in the next month or two. However, we’re also hoping to adopt a new theme for our phpBBWeekly.net website that reflects the new artwork but still has some originality. Star Trek Guide member Midnight Phoenix is custom-designing a brand new WordPress theme just for us (and donating his services as well, by the way), but he’d be interested in hearing your suggestions, particularly since David and myself only have a very short wishlist. If you’d like to contribute your comments and participate, check out the discussion topic on our forum!

Episode Duration: 42:27
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples) and David Lewis (Highway of Life)

Following a few weeks off for Douglas to go back to school and David to move house, we are back with another phpBB Weekly–and this time, David is leading off the show. Still, we have a great episode–despite an unexpected technical glitch that happened at the end of the show.

phpBB3 Release Candidate 5 has been released, and Acyd Burn has noted that it will hopefully be the last one before Olympus goes gold. But then, looking at the bug tracker, is there a chance that there will be another RC forthcoming?
This week, the MOD team asked for feedback on the new MOD Database. David summarizes a number of the comments that have been made thus far, and Douglas also offers some of his opinions.

The MOD of the Week is Welcome PM on First Login for phpBB3 by DualFusion, and the Style of the Week is Milky Way for phpBB3 by Mighty Gorgon. Plus, Handyman/GroovePlugs calls in to tell us about his Photo Gallery MOD for phpBB3.
If you have a MOD or Style that you’d like us to feature on a future episode, bookmark it on del.icio.us with the tag phpbbwmod or phpbbwstyle.

Finally, David mentions Skitch, a Mac-only application that he has been using to take screenshots and give MOD support with. Douglas wrote a review of Skitch which describes the program in more detail.

Where was David Lewis?

Hi Everyone, apologies for my disappearance for the phpBB Weekly podcast episode #023.
As you know, that episode was recorded live on Saturday, 7-7-07, and here in Nashville Tennessee USA, there was a large convention taking place on that day at LP field (The Titans Stadium), probably the biggest convention Nashville has ever had. Every hotel within 45 minutes of Nashville was booked up solid for the whole week.
Well over 40,000 people traveled from different parts of the Country came to meet at “The Call”. I was involved in some of the preparations for the pre-convention gatherings all day Friday, and the convention itself lasted from 7am to 10pm on Saturday, so I’m still trying to recover from 13 hours in the hot humid sun with sparse amounts of water barely enough to keep me alive and jumping up and down for all 13 hours.
I had forgotten that the Convention landed on the same day as phpBB Weekly, and I had to provide lodging for a large group of people from Walla Walla Washington as they were unsuccessful in locating a hotel, so I was unable to notify Douglas that I would not be able to make it to the show.
This Convention was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I could not miss, but it was a rare occasion, and do plan on joining Douglas on the next episode of phpBB Weekly.
Thanks to all those who did call in or join in the phpBB Weekly live, hopefully you will call in again on our next show.
