This special episode of phpBB Weekly focused on discussion of phpBB’s relationship with Joomla! and how it has developed into the RokBridge integration between the two products. For the first half of the show, Douglas is joined by phpBB Developer Nils Adermann (naderman) who talks about how Joomla! and phpBB came together, how the relationship has grown and progressed, and about how the RokBridge project has developed and what it means for the future of both projects.

We also ran into some extra time, and took advantage of it to discuss the opening of the Styles Database, MODX 1.2.0, an early look at the upcoming 3.0.2 release, and some of the latest things checked into the Ascraeus SVN development.

Then, for the second half of the show, David joins us live from the Joomla!Day event in Vancouver during his lunch break, in which he talks a bit more about the phpBB-Joomla! relationship and about some of the things that have been taking place at the event. He also introduces us to Brad Baker, one of the Joomla! Core Team members. He’ll fully recap his experiences from the event on our next episode.

The MOD of the Week is Viewtopic Birthday for phpBB3 by eviL<3. There is no Style of the Week this week (because, as you hear on the show, the style databases that Douglas tried to connect to were down!).

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are going to have to cancel phpBB Weekly for this Saturday, January 12th. David’s move to Spokane, which has been the cause of his absence for the past few episodes, has unfortunately had some issues which have slowed it down. Therefore, he will not be able to be here this Saturday for phpBB Weekly. At the same time, I will be out of town for a meeting, and will not be here for phpBB Weekly. Therefore, we are not going to be recording an episode this week.

phpBB Weekly #047, which was intended to be the episode where David will be revealing for the first time what’s new in phpBB 3.2, will be postponed to next Saturday, January 19th. David promises that he’ll be there, and I’ll also be there, so it will be great for both of us to be on the show at the same time for the momentous occasion. Even better, David will be joined by MOD Team member Josh W. (A_Jelly_Doughnut) and Development Team member David M. (DavidMJ)*, who will be joining David in revealing what’s new in the up-and-coming 3.2. And, of course, I will be there, serving as the curmudgeon offering my opinions and judgments on the revealed features, and asking as many more-in-depth type questions as I can, while also making sure that the episode doesn’t trump two hours. And, based on past experiences, with something this big going on, you can expect that there will be some more team members lurking about on TalkShoe, especially now that TalkShoe is more accessible now.

Oh, and of course, we invite you to not only come live and be among the first to learn about the new stuff coming in the next major release of phpBB, but also join in with your own questions and comments! Who knows (David does) whether or not your most-wanted feature will actually be showing up in 3.2, but sound off in this topic about what you want the teams to deliver in 3.2, and we’ll be sure that they hear what you want them to hear.

We thought that we were going to do this episode of phpBB Weekly on Skypecasts, but we encountered problems with their service that made TalkShoe feel like the utopia of live audio streaming, so we decided to move back, and indeed, a brand new bugfixed update of TalkShoe was waiting for us. After spending some time talking about our interesting phpBB Weekly plight, congratulating David’s brother Francis Lewis (Handyman) for becoming a MOD Team member (the first time when two brothers have both been on the teams!), and talking about the recent Joomla!-phpBB meetup, we welcomed phpBB Developer DavidMJ as special guest for the show.

With DavidMJ, we talk about some of the many changes in phpBB3 over phpBB2, particularly in the areas of security and the improved accessibility of the codebase for MOD and style authors. DavidMJ also tells us about his particular areas of expertise in phpBB3, the database management system (DBMS). We also discuss the question over phpBB2′s fate, how much longer phpBB3 will support PHP 4, and some technical info on the various optimizations in phpBB3, and much more.

This episode did not go according to plan. We had expected to have phpBB Developer DavidMJ on as a guest today, but unbeknownst to us at the time, he had a family emergency and was unable to make it, so we ended up coming together with a pretty good show while we stalled and took comments from our live listeners (six of whom were phpBB team members!). This episode was recorded right before the release of phpBB3 RC-6 and the ensuing chaos that has followed the release, which you can read a bit about in the previous post on this blog, and which will be discussed more thoroughly on next week’s episode. We do hope to try to bring DavidMJ on sometime in November, with more details coming soon.

In this episode we talk a bit about the phpBB Security Team and Incident Investigation Team and about what those teams do, and also briefly discuss some common security vulnerabilities common in PHP code that both the developers and MOD authors need to look out for. We do a little bit more coverage of the just-about-to-be-released RC-6, and wander off for a few minutes into a discussion of Mac security vs. Windows security. (It’s not as bad as you might think.) Then, Jeffro calls in and asks us to talk a bit more about just how private private messaging is, and we also talk about changes in phpBB3 styles vs. phpBB2 styles and possible enhancements to phpBB MODding in the long-term future.

We briefly mentioned this as a possiblity on our last phpBB Weekly episode, now I guess it’s time for me to make it official. This Saturday, we will be reining in a developer onto the program. That’s right: phpBB Developer DavidMJ will be joining us on Saturday to talk about phpBB3, I would guess. Let’s just say, I wouldn’t want to bet against those odds.

Of course, we’ll probably ask him a bit about what he does in his own life (even though phpBB team members by general rule aren’t supposed to have a personal life) and how he got to be a phpBB developer, but the two Davids (DavidMJ and our own David Lewis) will also be talking a lot about the most significant new features coming in phpBB3, including some you may not have known about. He will also be taking in-depth about the new DBAL tools (which he was in charge of designing, by the way).
