The jury was out on whether or not we would be able to recover from our, um, interesting episode last weekend, but we came around with a somewhat more serious episode this week. This episode featured our tenth guest interview in this podcast’s short history, and represents our response to the many comments that we have received from our listeners recently asking for us to focus a bit more on styles for phpBB.

On this episode, we were joined by phpBB style author Scott Stubblefield, who makes some of our favorite styles for phpBB2 and for phpBB3. On this episode, Scott tells us about how he got into making phpBB styles, his experiences as a style author transitioning from phpBB2 to phpBB3, tips for users interested in making phpBB styles, and much more. Plus, David answers a frequently asked question regarding how long it will be before the phpBB.com Styles Database finally comes back online.

The MOD of the Week is Quick reply for phpBB3 by rxu, and the Style of the Week is Star Trek for phpBB3 by Scott Stubblefield.

Be sure to join us next week when we will have a very special surprise topic that will be sure to knock your socks off…

On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples), David Lewis (Highway of Life), and Patrick O’Keefe

Today marks a very special milestone for phpBB Weekly (for any podcast, actually): our fiftieth episode! To celebrate, we bring you an interview that Douglas has been looking forward to for ten months. Patrick O’Keefe, the administrator of the iFroggy Network and phpBBHacks.com, joins us for a very interesting discussion.

During the interview, Patrick talks about phpBBHacks.com, including how and why it was started back in 2001 (yeah, it predates phpBB2!), and how it has grown and expanded in its seven year history. We also take an unbiased look at some of the differences between phpBBHacks.com and the phpBB.com MOD Database, and how phpBBHacks.com has become one of the most popular third-party phpBB sites on the internet (well, according to Google, anyway). He also talks a bit about his two websites for community administrators: ManagingCommunities.com (a blog) and CommunityAdmins.com (a community for communities). Finally, he tells us about his new book, Managing Online Forums, coming in late April. We will be reviewing his book on a future episode of phpBB Weekly, as well as giving away a copy! Stay tuned for more details on that.

David also answers a question in the TalkShoe chat room revealing that Ascraeus will feature the much-requested RSS Syndication feature built-in. We briefly talk about the significance of that feature addition.

And at the end of the show, David gives us his exclusive ski tips, based on the bloopers he endured earlier this week.

The MOD of the Week is SEO MOD for phpBB3 by Handyman`, and the Style of the Week is Macinscott 3 by Scott Stubblefield.

Episode Duration: 1:51:41
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples), David Lewis (Highway of Life), and Johan Janssens

On this very special episode of phpBB Weekly, we are joined by Johan Janssens, the Project Manager and Lead Developer of Joomla! Johan tells us a bit about the Joomla! project, how and why phpBB and Joomla! are collaborating together, and about how the upcoming RokBridge integration between Joomla! 1.5 and phpBB3 will work. David also talks a bit about how the Joomla! integration prompted the addition of the hooks/plugins system for phpBB3, and how it opens up the possibility for many other third-party integrations with phpBB.

But, of course, we can’t forget the other big news of the week. phpBB 3.0.0 “Olympus”, dubbed the “gold release”, was published on December 13th at 17:00 GMT (coincidentally, the same time of day that phpBB Weekly is recorded live). We take a final look back at the countdown to the release, look at the press coverage of the phpBB3 release, and just reminisce and marvel at the five year process. Plus, we examine what’s next for the developers, the teams, an the community as we look down the road ahead.

The MOD of the Week is phpBB3 Error Logging Tool for phpBB3 by Highway of Life, and the Style of the Week is proChristmas for phpBB3 by topdown.

The intro to the episode is David’s Gold Day Prize Video, narrated by our very own illustrious Douglas Bell.

There will not be a live episode next week as Douglas and David will be doing holiday activities with our families, but there will be a Best Of 2007 episode published on Sunday, December 23rd. Feel free to share your favorite moments for the Best Of episode. Douglas will return on December 29th for a Year 2007 Wrap-Up episode, and David will return with Douglas on January 5th.

phpBB Weekly #038: Guest DavidMJ

Episode Duration: 1:46:26
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples), David Lewis (Highway of Life), and David M. (DavidMJ)

We thought that we were going to do this episode of phpBB Weekly on Skypecasts, but we encountered problems with their service that made TalkShoe feel like the utopia of live audio streaming, so we decided to move back, and indeed, a brand new bugfixed update of TalkShoe was waiting for us. :) After spending some time talking about our interesting phpBB Weekly plight, congratulating David’s brother Francis Lewis (Handyman) for becoming a MOD Team member (the first time when two brothers have both been on the teams!), and talking about the recent Joomla!-phpBB meetup, we welcomed phpBB Developer DavidMJ as special guest for the show.

With DavidMJ, we talk about some of the many changes in phpBB3 over phpBB2, particularly in the areas of security and the improved accessibility of the codebase for MOD and style authors. DavidMJ also tells us about his particular areas of expertise in phpBB3, the database management system (DBMS). We also discuss the question over phpBB2′s fate, how much longer phpBB3 will support PHP 4, and some technical info on the various optimizations in phpBB3, and much more.

The MOD of the Week is Instant Post Redirect for phpBB3 by eviL<3, and the Style of the Week is Holiday Style for phpBB3 by Echo. (Yes, we did unintentionally pick styles from the same author on two consecutive episodes.)
Also, as the holiday season gets closer, we’re asking you to recommend any holiday-related MODs and Styles to us to feature on the upcoming episodes of phpBB Weekly. If you have one to recommend, bookmark it on del.icio.us with the tag “phpbbwmod” or “phpbbwstyle” and we’ll consider promoting it on the show.

Editor’s Note: Apologies for the time it took to release this episode. I was having some difficulties getting my editing software to work properly until Apple pushed out an updated release which fixed everything. I look forward to when we’ll stop having technical difficulties on this podcast!

phpBB Weekly #036

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download MP3 Episode (37.4 MB)

Episode Duration: 1:05:20
On This Episode: David Lewis (Highway of Life), Paul Sohier (Paul), and Micheal Cottingham (Techie-Micheal)

Douglas missed this episode because his return flight from Long Beach the day before suffered a seven hour delay (read more if you’re interested), effectively turning it into a red eye flight, so he slept in during this episode. TalkShoe apparently wasn’t being cooperative, but in a fairly Official Podcast-esque episode of phpBB Weekly, he is joined via a Skype conference call by phpBB team members Paul and Techie-Micheal.

This episode, like about a third of our episodes to date, is all about MODs. David, Paul, and Micheal talk extensively about MOD Development, the MOD Database, and other things MOD authors may want to know. Finally, they talk a bit about the tribulations of giving support for boards with MODs on them, and what the Support Team can and cannot do to help you when a MODded board needs help.

The MOD of the Week is Prime Memberlist Filter for phpBB3 by primehalo, and the Style of the Week is Brushed Metal for phpBB3 by Robin Huurman.
