On this special episode of phpBB Weekly, we held a live stream of the Question & Answer Team Member Panel Discussion session taking place at Londonvasion 2008. A panel of team members answered various questions from the Londonvasion audience, from the phpBB IRC channels, and most of all, from the phpBB Weekly live audience. This quality wasn’t the best (had a number of technical difficulties to get the stream to work at all), but nevertheless, this was certainly an interesting session to be a part of. Listen in on this exclusively-special episode of phpBB Weekly!

Thanks in particular to David Lewis, Paul Sohier, Yuriy Rusko, and Eric Faerber for helping us get through the technical issues on the London side of this episode.

phpBB Weekly #043: Guest Johan Janssens of Joomla!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download MP3 Episode (63.9 MB)

Episode Duration: 1:51:41
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples), David Lewis (Highway of Life), and Johan Janssens

On this very special episode of phpBB Weekly, we are joined by Johan Janssens, the Project Manager and Lead Developer of Joomla! Johan tells us a bit about the Joomla! project, how and why phpBB and Joomla! are collaborating together, and about how the upcoming RokBridge integration between Joomla! 1.5 and phpBB3 will work. David also talks a bit about how the Joomla! integration prompted the addition of the hooks/plugins system for phpBB3, and how it opens up the possibility for many other third-party integrations with phpBB.

But, of course, we can’t forget the other big news of the week. phpBB 3.0.0 “Olympus”, dubbed the “gold release”, was published on December 13th at 17:00 GMT (coincidentally, the same time of day that phpBB Weekly is recorded live). We take a final look back at the countdown to the release, look at the press coverage of the phpBB3 release, and just reminisce and marvel at the five year process. Plus, we examine what’s next for the developers, the teams, an the community as we look down the road ahead.

The MOD of the Week is phpBB3 Error Logging Tool for phpBB3 by Highway of Life, and the Style of the Week is proChristmas for phpBB3 by topdown.

The intro to the episode is David’s Gold Day Prize Video, narrated by our very own illustrious Douglas Bell.

There will not be a live episode next week as Douglas and David will be doing holiday activities with our families, but there will be a Best Of 2007 episode published on Sunday, December 23rd. Feel free to share your favorite moments for the Best Of episode. Douglas will return on December 29th for a Year 2007 Wrap-Up episode, and David will return with Douglas on January 5th.

This episode of phpBB Weekly was recorded on Saturday, November 3–right after Halloween, so I guess someone was playing a trick on us. However, this episode was pretty much ruined when TalkShoe froze up on me in the middle of the episode, however I notified TalkShoe and they have since released an update which has seemed to fix up these problems.

David and I debated whether or not we wanted to release this episode, but we decided to go ahead and do it anyway. On this episode, Douglas continues the countdown to the final release of phpBB3 by answering a number of questions about phpBB3 from our audience, at least until TalkShoe got stuck.

The MOD of the Week is ACP Site Announcement Centre for phpBB2 by lefty74, and the Style of the Week is Halloween Style for phpBB3 by Echo. As we get closer to the holidays, we’re asking for people to recommend holiday-related MODs and Styles to us. Bookmark them on del.icio.us with the tag “phpbbwmod” or “phpbbwstyle”.

phpBB Weekly Forum Now Open!

We’ve had a number of people e-mail us and tell us that, you know, if phpBB Weekly is all about forum software, shouldn’t you have a forum for phpBB Weekly? Well, it’s a great idea, but managing a forum is a lot of work (as we’ve mentioned on the show), and so far, we’ve pretty much been content with the comments system on the blog and the nice form where you can submit your questions.

Well, thanks to our good friends at Star Trek Guide, which, not coincidentally, is co-administrated by phpBB Weekly co-host David Lewis, they have now created a brand new forum just for phpBB Weekly, which we will be taking advantage of and hope that all of our wonderful listeners will take advantage of. Keep an eye out on there for topics where we’ll invite you to submit questions for when we bring guests on the show and ask for occasional feedback on the show. If there’s any comments from the forum that we find noteworthy, we may decide to mention your comments on the show. And, a much-requested, we have a special topic for help connecting to TalkShoe. :)

We’re really excited to be expanding phpBB Weekly in all of these ways. phpBB is about creating communities, and David and I are really excited to be able to find more and more ways to make phpBB Weekly a community-driven podcast. We may be the hosts, but you, the listeners, are the community members that make phpBB happen.

So run, don’t walk, over to the phpBB Weekly forum over at Star Trek Guide! :)

phpBB Weekly #033 Will NOT be on TalkShoe

Sorry folks, but apparently TalkShoe is having some kind of issues right now that is preventing us from connecting to them. However, since David has to catch a flight in 2 hours, he and I are going to go ahead and record the episode ourselves over Skype. I wish to apologize to any of you who were hoping to call in this morning. I have reported the problem to TalkShoe and they’ll hopefully get back to me on what’s going on, however we’re going to have to skip the live callers this morning.

If you had a question that you really wanted to ask, you can e-mail it in and I’ll be checking the e-mails while we record the show. Get it in within the next hour to make sure that I’ll get it in time.
