Happy New Year! 2009 is here, and we hope you all had a safe and exciting celebration of the New Year last night. On this special episode, phpBB Weekly closes out the year 2008 with a look back at some of our favorite moments from the forty-six episodes we recorded this past year. From the silly stuff to the serious discussions, from the announcements to the events (that somehow David was always the one to travel to, but perhaps that will change in 2009…), this episode is a great look back on the good times we’ve had in 2008 on this show, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The following clips are featured in this Best Of episode (the time in parentheses indicates the timestamp in this episode where the clip begins):

There were some other episodes that we would have liked to include in this episode, but in an effort to keep this show within a reasonable amount of time, they had to be cut out. Nevertheless, we encourage you to check out these “runner-up” episodes:

  • Episode #055: Interview with Style Author Scott Stubblefield
  • Episode #061: Interview with Patrick O’Keefe on his new book
  • Episode #064: Interview with Jeff (JKThinking) of the phpBBireland Podcast
  • Episode #067: David’s More-Complete Recap of Joomla!Day Vancouver
  • Episode #079: David and Cullen (Brainy) on over-moderating, CAPTCHAs, and phpBB 3.2 “Ascraeus” features
  • Episode #082: Bertie Mons Presidential Debate
  • Episode #088: Interview with Dave Rathbun on phpBB2Refugees.com

Our 2009 season kicks off this Saturday, January 3rd with a full discussion on the now-official retirement of phpBB2; be sure to join us then. And check back here tomorrow afternoon to check out our new phpBB Weekly website. For now, enjoy the new year, and so long 2008!

Well, we have come to the end of another year and just about closed out our second season of phpBB Weekly, and on this episode, we take a look back at how the phpBB project, teams, and community have evolved in the past year. We discuss all of the major announcements of the year and their lasting impact, as well as mention some of the best times we’ve had on this podcast over the past year, make some predictions for 2009, and we discuss what we think the accomplishments of this year have meant for phpBB overall. All of the announcements mentioned can be found in the phpBB.com Announcements forum.

David did also give us the scoop on the announcement that AutoMOD 1.0.0 beta 1 was released. We discussed how AutoMOD actually works and how to use it (which I don’t think we’ve actually covered before), and Douglas compares AutoMOD to EasyMOD for phpBB2 to look at their similarities and differences.

Finally, Douglas closes out the show by thanking everyone who contributed to phpBB Weekly in the past year and helped make this show possible. Be sure to check back here on Wednesday, December 31st, when we will release a phpBB Weekly’s Best of 2008 clipshow episode featuring our best moments from this past year. Then, check back on Thursday, January 1st, when we will launch our brand new (and totally gorgeous) website and album artwork! You won’t want to miss it.

The MOD of the Week is Skype Mod by RMcGirr83 and the Style of the Week is Maxthon by Culprit.

Here’s wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year! :D

On this episode, Patrick O’Keefe (owner of the iFroggy Network of blogs and communities) rejoins us on phpBB Weekly, this time to talk about his just-released brand new book, Managing Online Forums: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Run Successful Community Discussion Boards. After first talking with Patrick about how and why he wrote the book, we then go chapter by chapter, looking at the various points that he makes in his book and discussing them.

We do highly recommend this book (no, we’re not getting paid to say that) because it covers a lot of important things that prospective community admins should know that you won’t find in any user manual. If you want to find out more about why we’re so excited about this book, check out (no pun intended) this episode.

In addition, we wrap up our listener survey by doing our prize drawing! Winners have been notified by e-mail and should reply to the e-mail in order to receive their prize.

David is away on this episode (and will probably be away on episode #046 as well) as he goes through the necessary steps of his move to Spokane, Washington. However, on this Year in Review episode, Douglas walks through all of the major announcements and events that took place for phpBB during the year 2007, including all of the beta and RC releases, the website outages, prosilver, the Community Choice Awards, MOD Team announcements, and of course, the 3.0.0 release. He also looks ahead into the year 2008 and pinpoints some of the things that we can expect to come down the road in the next few months.

In addition, the latest update on what has been going on with Douglas’ whole webhost fiasco and a final recap of the year 2007 for phpBB Weekly are also provided.

All of the major announcements covered in this episode can be found in the phpBB Announcements forum. Some of the links that were mentioned in particular on the episode included the designing prosilver feature, Bertie Conquers Olympus on Mars, and the information page for the RokBridge extension.

The MOD of the Week is Prime Notify PM for phpBB3 by primehalo, and the Style of the Week is Flash Web for phpBB3 by digitalnerd.

Have a very happy new year (and don’t party too hard)! See you all in the year 2008!
