Douglas had another test to complete during this episode of phpBB Weekly, and David apparently had a harder time hijacking team members for this episode, so he was joined this time by his brother, Francis Lewis (Handyman). With the retirement of phpBB2 still holding the #1 slot for phpBB discussions across the internet, David and Francis talk a bit more about the retirement news, albeit from somewhat more of a teams-based angle. During this episode, they talk a bit about how the EOL of phpBB2 will help the phpBB3 branch (as well as 3.2 Ascraeus development) in the long run. They also discuss some of the enticing phpBB3 features that users and MOD authors can see as they slowly transition over to phpBB3, including a look at how and why phpBB3 is more “stable” than phpBB2, some of the interesting aspects of phpBB3’s Database Abstraction Layer (DBAL) and an overall analysis of why phpBB3 doesn’t require as much MODding as phpBB2 did.

In other news, the MOD Database Cleanup is slated to be completed in full on Wednesday, April 30th Saturday, May 31st, and David and Francis talk a bit about will be taking place. They also provide an update on the latest news with Londonvasion and the Star Trek Guide MODs Manager, as well as a status update on the MOD Team’s upcoming Package Manager (codenamed Blinky).

Douglas was off taking a test during this episode, so he couldn’t make it, but then again, David forgot that it was Saturday, which is why the live stream of phpBB Weekly never happened! Whoops. Anyway, David managed to grab together a couple of team members to talk to for what could almost pass as another episode of the Official phpBB Podcast. So, on this episode, he’s joined by Paul Sohier (of the MOD Team), Yuriy Rusko (Marshalrusty of the Support Team), and Ashley Pinner (NeoThermic, Support Team Leader).

Anyway, this past week, the inevitable phpBB 3.0.1 was released featuring dozens of bugfixes, including two security-related fixes. As this marks the first non-RC-related update to phpBB3, they spend a little bit of time reviewing the process for updating from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1 and the importance of keeping your boards up-to-date. In addition, they discuss other common support issues with upgrading and how upgrading relates to the importance of keeping core code changes in MODs down to a minimum for compatibility.

They then discuss the recent alpha release of a MOD by naderman (of the Development Team) of the Sphinx Search Plugin for phpBB. Sphinx is a free open-source SQL fulltext search engine that is now another option that you can use for indexing your board’s content on your search page, and will quite possibly be showing up in phpBB 3.2 “Ascraeus.”

Yuriy gives us a quick update on the latest Londonvasion details (and by the way, you should also check out phpBB Weekly’s latest Londonvasion plans), and David tells us about Star Trek Guide’s new MOD Manager, as well as how you can obtain the “Borg Invasion” style that was used for STG’s recent April Fools joke.

No MOD or Style of the Week was selected this week, but we promise that we will make up for lost time next week and get back into the MODs and Styles selections.

A lot of weird stuff has been happening around the phpBB community this past week, most of which is the fault of the phpBB team members. First, all of the team members in an over-obvious ploy turned all of their avatars into weird-looking gold replicas (King Midas must have visited phpBB.com!), then David puts all kind of weird encrypted messages on Star Trek Guide leading to this video (passcode: goldday), and now we have a countdown which doesn’t count down to the final release, but counts down to the time when the phpBB teams will tell us when the final release will be, thus enabling us to start the countdown to the final release, etc.

Unfortunately, Douglas doesn’t like suspense, and so the disputes between himself and David during the past week come to a peak as Douglas interrogates David and the other team members on the live show about how crazy they are to pull off all these shenanigans, and in particular David for pulling off his own miniature MacHeist.

In other news, the phpBB Weekly website has been down since Tuesday, and it’s completely the fault of Douglas’ webhost, which has not been responding to his persistent e-mails. As Douglas tries more drastic actions, he asks the phpBB Weekly listeners to chip in and send e-mails to his webhost to see if we can get their attention so Douglas can regain access to phpBBWeekly.net. The MOD of the Week is Ajax Shoutbox for phpBB3 by Paul (incidentally, Paul has a test board; username/password is “tester” without quotes), and the Style of the Week is Christmas Style by Kber. We’ve had a number of people e-mail us and tell us that, you know, if phpBB Weekly is all about forum software, shouldn’t you have a forum for phpBB Weekly? Well, it’s a great idea, but managing a forum is a lot of work (as we’ve mentioned on the show), and so far, we’ve pretty much been content with the comments system on the blog and the nice form where you can submit your questions.

Well, thanks to our good friends at Star Trek Guide, which, not coincidentally, is co-administrated by phpBB Weekly co-host David Lewis, they have now created a brand new forum just for phpBB Weekly, which we will be taking advantage of and hope that all of our wonderful listeners will take advantage of. Keep an eye out on there for topics where we’ll invite you to submit questions for when we bring guests on the show and ask for occasional feedback on the show. If there’s any comments from the forum that we find noteworthy, we may decide to mention your comments on the show. And, a much-requested, we have a special topic for help connecting to TalkShoe.

We’re really excited to be expanding phpBB Weekly in all of these ways. phpBB is about creating communities, and David and I are really excited to be able to find more and more ways to make phpBB Weekly a community-driven podcast. He talks about how he built his Star Trek Guide Forums off of phpBB3 CVS (which is not recommended, by the way) , the differences between MODding for phpBB2 and phpBB3, and much more. We had an excellent interview on this episode which is highly recommended for anyone who is interested in learning more about what’s new in phpBB3, including MOD authors and people who are interested in building a real online community with phpBB3.
