24 Hour Podcast Happening This Weekend

Todd Cochrane, the CEO of RawVoice, the parent company of the Tech Podcast Network (which phpBB Weekly, of course, is a part of) will once again be doing his 24 Hour Podcast event this weekend. He will be broadcasting continuously for 24 hours, starting with a pre-show at 10:30 AM EST tomorrow (Saturday), and ending at 11 AM EST on Sunday. During his 24-hour broadcast, he will be interviewing numerous other tech podcast hosts, running the monthly Tech Podcast Network Roundtable, and recording one of his own podcasts. This event will also be raising money to support disabled veterans, with a goal of $3000, and donors will be entered in a giveaway drawing that will take place at the conclusion of the 24 hour podcast.

The 24 Hour Podcast will take place on TalkShoe, so you can join the fun there the same way that you join the fun on phpBB Weekly (their Call ID is 10832). Todd will also be streaming video live on UStream.

So don’t miss out on this exciting event and its worthy cause! We also hope to see you on phpBB Weekly tomorrow, live as always!

Episode Duration: 1:14:08
On This Episode: Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples) and David Lewis (Highway of Life)

Well, this episode of phpBB Weekly certainly did not run as intended. We had planned to have guests from the Tech Podcast Network join us to talk about their experiences with bulletin board-based websites, but to our surprise, none of them have worked with them before! Then, TalkShoe surprised us when they ended up doing a hardware move (and not warning us about it until half an hour into the show), which forced us to record this episode off of TalkShoe. And then, David ended up having to do the second half of the show from a car en route to the airport to catch a flight after the show, resulting in, well, not the greatest audio quality possible. Nevertheless, we did have a good (albeit technical) episode.

On this episode, David and I start out by welcoming the five (count them, five) new members of the Moderator Team, whom are cherokee red, ChrisRLG, darcie, dellsystem, and will_hough. We then take a look back at what caused the phpBB.com Outage last weekend, including what caused it, how serious it was, and how the teams have responded to it.

For the main part of the show, David takes a look at the many changes that will be coming in phpBB 3.0.RC6, including a new location for download.php, new dynamic login forms, the new use of check_form_key() and add_form_key() on all forms, new option so that you don’t have to use MD5 hashing anymore if you don’t want to, checking for the ‘IN_PHPBB’ constant in all files, and a number of other minor changes. MOD authors may want to check and see if their phpBB3 MODs will be RC-6 compatible.

The MOD of the Week is Last Posts Titles for phpBB2 by LEW21 and the Style of the Week is Sniper_Blue for phpBB3 by Sniper_E.

Upcoming Guests for phpBB Weekly

We’re hearing from our listeners that you guys love it when we bring on guests to the show. And, now that David is on the teams, we’re hearing from all these team members that want to be guests on the show. Well, we’re probably not going to be going all out to bring guests on every week, but we’re probably going to start having more of them, and our next two episodes are going to be some exciting ones. I mentioned these briefly at the end of phpBB Weekly #031, but wanted to reiterate them here.

On phpBB Weekly #032, this Saturday, September 29th, MOD Team leader Eric Faerber (wGEric) will be joining us again on phpBB Weekly. I had kind of a lame interview with him back on episode #004 (and it was completely my fault), so David will be doing most of the questioning on this show, but I’ll be there as well. We’ll be talking about some of the projects that the MOD Team is working on now in preparation for the upcoming release of phpBB3, what you need to know about MODding in phpBB3, and we’ll also be talking a bit about the new hooks and events functionality coming in the next phpBB3 release. And of course, Eric will be answering your questions and comments, so be sure to join us for the live episode!

Then, on phpBB Weekly #033, which will be on Saturday, October 6th, we will be inviting a small panel of other members of the Tech Podcasts Network (of which this show is a member, by the way) to join us to talk about their experiences with building a true community around a bulletin-board/forum website, along with tips and answering questions. (Note that this is still subject to change as I’m still trying to arrange a panel, or at the very least, a guest!) Join us to get some expert tips on how you can attract members to your forum and build a community.

We have these shows and some other exciting shows planned, and we hope to have you join us for our upcoming episodes of phpBB Weekly!

phpBB Weekly on the Tech Podcast Network!

I’m excited to announce that phpBB Weekly has been accepted as a part of the Tech Podcast Network! The Tech Podcast Network is a rather exclusive site which promotes various podcasts and podcasters reporting from all sides of the tech realm. I’m really excited about the show’s acceptance. For now, it will mean a little bit more exposure and promotion, but hopefully we’ll have some additional announcements related to them coming soon! In the meantime, check them out to discover some other cool shows from the world of tech.
